We test a variety of bikes and parts in the editorial team. Each and every one of us has a favourite part that makes him or her particularly enthusiastic or happy. In our new series "Editors' favourite parts", we present our current favourites. Here: Christian Schleker and the Ebos Alpenhupe bicycle bell.

Ebo's Alpenhube: a birthday present

My sister-in-law gave me an unexpected gift: a mini cowbell. Admittedly, I was a little surprised inside and didn't really know what to do with it at first. After all, I do sport, and quite seriously at that. Nevertheless, I didn't want to jeopardise the peace in the house, so I politely thanked him for the gift and stowed the Ebos Alpenhupe in the depths of my bike backpack for the time being.

I then had an unpleasant experience on a descent in the mountains. A couple of hikers didn't notice me and froze in shock when I suddenly passed them at high speed. Emotions then boiled over. Somehow that's understandable - encounters like that happen from time to time. So far I've just put up with the stress, but now I had my sister-in-law's present in my rucksack: the Alpine horn. And what can I say? Since I've been using it, cycling in the mountains has become 100 per cent conflict-free!

Bicycle bell: Simple function, one hand is sufficient for operation

The Alpine horn is characterised by its simple design and handling. The strap, which is used to attach it to the handlebars, also functions as a magnetic strap to switch the bell on and off. Simply pull the strap off the magnet on the handlebars and let it snap onto the bell housing - then there is silence. When the strap is returned to the handlebars, a gentle bell sounds.

It's understandable that hikers are annoyed when a biker suddenly emerges from the forest. But I was surprised at how effective an early warning bell can be! People stand relaxed at the side of the road and let me ride past. Some nod appreciatively - or perhaps gratefully. The Alpine horn really is an inexpensive way of showing consideration.

Conclusion on the bicycle bell alpine horn

If only my sister-in-law had given me the Alpine horn much earlier! It would have saved me - and many other mountain hikers - a lot of trouble, frustration and nervous strain. With the Alpenhupe you get a reliable miniature item for a few euros that should not be missing on any mountain bike.
