DJI presents the Osmo Action 6 is the first action cam in its class to be equipped with a variable aperture. The camera, which is available immediately, offers an aperture range of f/2.0 to f/4.0 and is designed to optimise performance even in low light. Equipped with a square 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor and 2.4-μm fusion large pixels, the manufacturer promises significantly improved image quality compared to previous models. The Osmo Action 6 supports video recording at up to 4K/120fps in 4:3 format and introduces several innovations that DJI claims will set a new standard for action photography.
The variable aperture of the Osmo Action 6 represents a break with the traditional concept of fixed apertures in action cameras. Users can choose from various aperture modes for different shooting scenarios. The maximum aperture of f/2.0 allows more light into the shot and is intended to improve image quality in low light conditions. In Auto mode, the camera offers adaptive aperture range options, whereby the aperture automatically adjusts within the respective ranges to achieve optimum results in different scenes - from night shots in low light conditions to bright, detailed landscape shots. Starburst mode transforms city lights into starry lighting effects, designed to add a creative touch to urban night shots.
The Osmo Action 6 can be adapted to different shooting situations with optional accessories. With the separately available macro lens, a creative shallow depth of field can be achieved and detailed close-ups can be taken. The macro lens reduces the minimum focus distance from 35 centimetres to just 11 centimetres, which should enable razor-sharp vlog selfies at close range. For wide-angle shots, the camera automatically switches to Field-Of-View Boost mode when the Osmo Action 6 FOV Boost lens, which is also available separately, is attached. This expands the native 155° field of view to 182° - ideal for immersive point-of-view action shots where as much of the action as possible needs to be captured in the image.
According to DJI, the new 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor of the Osmo Action 6 with 2.4 μm pixels delivers up to 13.5 f-stops of dynamic range and should therefore ensure razor-sharp details in high-contrast shooting situations. The camera supports video recording at up to 4K/120fps in 4:3 format, with the larger sensor providing improved image quality in low light. With the combination of an expanded sensor, larger aperture and new noise reduction technology, the Osmo Action 6 enables video recording at up to 4K/60fps in SuperNight mode, even in difficult lighting conditions. DJI's 10-bit D-Log-M colour system is designed to preserve details in highlights and shadows, offering more flexibility in post-production. The camera also features an on-screen D-Log-M preview for real-time monitoring of colour and exposure.
With the new 4K Custom Mode, DJI is introducing a function that allows users to initially record in full resolution and then crop the footage to the desired image format later in post-production. This is intended to simplify the creation of videos for various social platforms, as users no longer have to manually align the camera horizontally or vertically while filming. The function makes it possible to extract different formats for different platforms from a single recording without having to accept any loss of quality.
The Osmo Action 6 supports slow motion recording at up to 4K/120fps as standard and can create up to 32x super slow motion playback at 1080p through intelligent interpolation. By interpolating frames recorded at 1080p/240fps, the camera achieves a slow motion effect equivalent to recording at 960fps when the footage is played back at 1080p/30fps.
The Osmo Action 6 offers various stabilisation modes for different shooting scenarios. RockSteady 3.0 and RockSteady 3.0+ reduce camera shake, while HorizonBalancing corrects tilt to keep the horizon level within ±45°. HorizonSteady mode eliminates roll axis shake within 360° so that the horizon always remains level. With 2x lossless zoom, you can now zoom in closer without compromising 4K quality.
The Osmo Action 6 is designed for demanding applications. With protection class IP68, the camera is waterproof up to 20 metres without a housing and up to 60 metres with the optional waterproof housing. The camera's cold-resistant design, which according to the manufacturer is suitable for temperatures as low as -20°C, makes it possible to record in the mountains or in other extreme environments. The battery life of up to 4 hours is said to be sufficient for longer recording sessions, and the battery can be fast-charged to 80% in just 22 minutes. The 50 GB internal memory ensures that recordings can also be made without a memory card.
The Osmo Action 6 supports direct connection with up to two DJI microphone transmitters (compatible with Mic 2, Mic 3 or Mic Mini), enabling high-quality sound without the need for an additional receiver. The dual connection makes it possible to record two different audio sources - for example, a conversation between two people or ambient sounds such as engine sounds together with a voice-over. Even without an external transmitter, the camera's integrated three-microphone array records stereo sound, while the intelligent noise cancellation algorithm reduces wind noise to ensure clearer voice recording.
The DJI Osmo Action 6 is now available and is offered in two configurations. The Standard combo costs 379 euros In addition to the camera, it includes an Osmo Action Extreme Battery Plus (1950 mAh), an Osmo Dual-Direction quick-release adapter mount, an Osmo Action adhesive mount (curved), an Osmo locking screw, a USB-C to USB-C PD cable and Osmo Action anti-slip pads. The Adventure Combo is available for 479 euros and also includes two additional batteries, another quick-release adapter holder, an additional locking screw, the Osmo Battery Charger 3 and the Osmo Extension Rod with a length of 1.5 metres.
