After eight years, the British company Tailfin is replacing its Alloy Rack with a completely newly developed system. The Journey Rack is based on an axle-mounted quick-release mechanism and carries the load via the rear wheel instead of the frame. The design is intended to work with a wider range of bikes, including full-suspension mountain bikes.
The Tri-Pivot architecture allows the carrier to move with the rear suspension. The system distributes the forces over the wheel and reduces the load on the frame mounts. The carrier can be assembled and disassembled in seconds without tools. The system can be folded flat for storage or transport.
The aluminium platform measures 33 by 10 centimetres and is made of 6061-T6 aluminium with an anodised finish. The distinctive arch uses a new manufacturing technique in which a crown is welded directly onto the moulded frame. This design is intended to achieve greater strength than the previous model.
Tailfin tests the system with 300,000 vertical load cycles, three times the ISO 11243 standard for luggage carriers. The ISO 11243 standard requires 100,000 cycles, but does not differentiate between on-road and off-road use. The Journey Rack passed the test with 10 kilograms per side plus 12 kilograms on the platform.
The version with pannier mounts carries up to 32 kilograms: 10 kilograms per pannier plus 12 kilograms on the platform. The minimum version without pannier mounts is designed for 22 kilograms: 6 kilograms per side on the quadruple bosses plus 12 kilograms at the top. The weight is 740 grams with pannier mounts and 580 grams without.
The system uses a concentric axle mounting system that transfers the load directly through the rear wheel. The quick-release triggers have been completely redeveloped and are designed to be easier to use. The Seatpost Connector utilises Tailfin's V-Mount system with improved grip.
An angle-adjustable Fit Link as the front connection enables adaptation to different frame geometries. Two versions are supplied to adjust the position of the platform relative to the saddle height. The geometry has been adapted so that the carrier sits further back and offers more storage space even in low saddle positions.
The pannier mounts are positioned further forwards than on the predecessor. This change in position is intended to improve weight distribution and handling when fully loaded. The carrier can be mounted directly on frames with eyelets or installed on frames without attachment points using Tailfin's adapter system.
The Journey Rack enables quick wheel changes without dismantling carrier components. The axle can be removed independently, allowing tyre changes without tools. Many axle-mounted carriers require partial disassembly when removing the rear wheel.
The modular metal construction allows individual components to be replaced. Unlike many competitor products with permanently riveted plastic parts, parts can be replaced or customised. The system is designed for repairs and maintenance over long periods of time.
Tailfin offers a five-year guarantee against manufacturing defects. In the event of accidental damage, the company offers a 30 per cent discount on equivalent replacement products.
The carrier works with Tailfin's own CargoPack and SpeedPack bags as well as with standard panniers from Ortlieb, Altura, Vaude and other manufacturers. The platform also accepts dry bags and cargo cages. Triple bosses on each side allow flexible mounting of accessories. The version without pannier mounts offers quadruple bosses.
The tyre clearance is 29 by 2.6 inches. New releases should increase the tyre clearance to 29 by 3.25 inches. With the optional mudguard, the tyre clearance is reduced to 29 by 2.25 inches. Integrated brackets accommodate rear lights. The platform can be adjusted in height and angle for saddle clearance.
The version without pannier brackets costs 180 euros including axle. The version with pannier brackets costs 230 euros including axle. The optional mudguard costs 20 euros, light mounts 20 euros. A mount for Garmin Varia or Wahoo Trackr Radar costs 30 euros.
