Anyone travelling by bike wants their valuable cargo to be well protected. Suitcases, cardboard boxes and padded bags all compete when it comes to choosing the right cover. We tell you which is best for your bike. Plus: How do you pack your bike case to optimally protect your valuable racer? We show you how in our TOUR video.

Some cyclists would probably prefer to travel with their bikes in the cargo hold of an aeroplane instead of anxiously taking a seat in the passenger compartment. Not that it's cosy in the cargo hold. But there is that unpleasant feeling that creeps up on you at check-in when you hand over your bike - and with it the nagging question: Will my bike arrive in one piece? The fact that bikes are damaged during transport, especially when travelling by plane, is not a horror story, but a reality. In order to sit relaxed on the plane, you want your bike to be well packed. There are three main options: The pannier, which with its hard, usually black shell exudes security and is the most trusted by cyclists. The pannier is somewhat lighter and more flexible and takes up less space when not in use. However, the flexible shell raises doubts as to whether the bike is safe inside. The bike box is the third and cheapest option. It may even be available free of charge from the bike dealer around the corner, but you can also buy it from mail order companies such as Rose.
