Six years ago, the Koblenz-based bike mail order company Canyon presented its first competition bike, the Aeroad - a racer that has always performed well in TOUR tests in its further developments. Canyon is ringing in the 2021 model year with a general overhaul of its top model. The Aeroad R065 is set to outshine its predecessor in almost all areas. There is talk of savings of up to 7.4 watts, up to 170 grams less frame weight and an increase in stiffness of up to 14 per cent. The test in the November issue of TOUR will clarify whether the big promises are really true:
The Canyon engineers spent a total of three years on the development, seeking advice from partners such as Swiss Side. Significant changes during this long development process include a completely redesigned cockpit and an aerodynamically optimised seat post.
The CP0018 Aerocockpit is said to be height-adjustable by up to 15 millimetres - without having to change the steerer length. Depending on the time of year or the planned use, a higher or lower setup can be selected, and not just once by shortening the steerer tube.
The width of the cockpit can also be adjusted, which makes sense not only for customisation to the rider but also for transport purposes. With a range of +/- 20 millimetres based on the delivery width, simply folding down the two "cockpit wings" for transport should eliminate the otherwise obligatory disassembly of the handlebars. The model variants Aeroad CF SLX and CFR rely on fully integrated cables and lines, while the CF SL has to make do with the cockpit solution of the predecessor model Aeroad R050.All three variants of the 2021 season - CF SL, CF SLX and CFR - have in common that they are equipped with the new seat post SP0046 for which Canyon promises improved aerodynamics.
The wheels of the Aeroad CF SL have a special feature: The frame size 3XS, which is additionally available here, comes with 650B wheels for smaller riders - while the Aeroad CF SLX and CFR are based on a continuous 700C wheels set.
Canyon has shortened the chainstays by five millimetres compared to the predecessor model, which should make it more agile. The standard tyre setup of 25 millimetres at the front and 28 millimetres at the rear should also contribute to this goal.
The new Aeroad will be available from Tuesday, 6 October at canyon.com available. Prices range from €3,299* for the Aeroad CF SL 7 to €4,999* for the Aeroad CF SLX 8 Di2 and €8,999* for the top-of-the-range Aeroad CFR 9 EPS model.
