The model Zero is in the Wilier programme the bike for tough mountain stages. With the Zero SL there is also a less cost-intensive analogue to the SLR, which Astana pros ride. Our test bike is the cheapest entry-level bike available for 900 Euro was upgraded with a carbon wheelset from the kit for an additional charge. The moderate aero result of both variants is hardly surprising.
Surprisingly, however, the inexpensive frameset of the Wilier Zero SL is no heavier than the expensive one, and the frame shape and geometry are copied one-to-one. The difference in quality between the versions only becomes apparent on the TOUR test standswhich attest to the significantly weaker stiffness values of the affordable model. This is of little relevance for light mountain bikers, but riders over 75kg may be bothered by the somewhat imprecise feedback in fast corners. Sprinters with strong acceleration might also prefer a more stable frameset.
For those who attach little importance to this, the Wilier Zero SL with an acceptable total weight of a good 8 kiloswhich is only undercut by the outstanding Canyon among the more affordable bikes. There is still potential in the bike: the wheels are heavy for carbon models, and the tyres could easily be improved. 100 grammes save. Their high rolling resistance accounts for a relevant part of the differences in our simulation. Good ride comfortA flattened handlebar at the top and the well-sprung seatpost feel higher quality and more comfortable than most of the competition.
