In cycling, coronavirus infections are on the rise again and favourite Primoz Roglic will have to do without two important helpers at the Giro d'Italia starting on Saturday.

Like his team Jumbo-Visma has announced that time trial world champion Tobias Foss and mountain specialist Robert Gesink will not be able to start in Fossacesia Marina due to Covid-related illnesses. The duo will be replaced by Jos van Emden and Rohan Dennis. Roglic, alongside road cycling world champion Remco Evenepoel (Soudal - Quick Step) is the favourite to win the second most important national tour.

Roglic team Jumbo-Visma plagued by corona

Jumbo-Visma already had to withdraw two riders from the Liège-Bastogne-Liège classic a week and a half ago. Sam Oomen and Tosh van der Sande did not turn up at the start at short notice due to positive corona tests.

At the beginning of the week, the team Trek-Segafredo that their captain Giulio Ciccone will miss the Giro due to Covid. The virus had previously stopped Frenchman Warren Barguil, who was due to lead the Arkéa-Samsic team in Italy.
